Hiking trips in and around Mossel Bay

2 min read

The Garden Route is littered with stunning and breath-taking hiking trails, and Mossel Bay is home to a few of those. While staying with us, why not try one of the following 5 trails?

Saint Blaize Hiking Trail (Moderate, 13.5 km)

Mossel Bay’s most well-known hiking trail is the Saint Blaize trail, which follows along the cliffs from The Point to Dana Bay. The trail starts at the cave just below the St. Blaize Lighthouse and runs for 13.5 kilometres which takes about 6 to 7 hours to complete. The trail can also be started in Dana Bay towards Mossel Bay. Dolphins can often be spotted from this trail and the birdlife is also excellent. This is a moderate trail that requires some fitness from hikers, with exits being far from the trail.

Point to Harbour Shore Trail (Easy, 4 km)

The Point to Harbour Shore Trail is an easy walk that should take you between one and two hours. It follows a paved walkway along the coast from The Point to the harbour or vice versa.

Wolwedans Dam Trail (Easy, 7.2 km)

This trail leads along the Groot Brak River for 3 kilometres to the lookout point at the Wolwedans Dam. The entrance to the trail can be found by heading in a northern direction on Charles Street in Groot Brakrivier, past the two churches. The trail has an elevation of 165 metres and has some lovely picnic spots. A good walk for families with children and the elderly.

Eight Bells Rooster Trails

Located 30 minutes away, the Eight Bells Rooster Trails offer 6 different hiking trails which stretch from 30 minutes to half a day’s walk. The different options are as follows: Farm Dam (easy, 1.3 km), Hamlet Hobble (easy, 1.7 km), River Rumble (easy, 1.9 km), Cedar Climb (moderate, 3.9 km), Ridge Outlook (moderate, 4 km), and Protea Hill (moderate to challenging, 4.2 km).

Oystercatcher Trail (Challenging, 47 km)

Although there are shorter options than the full trail, we would recommend doing the full 47 kilometres if you have the time and funds. This takes 4 nights and 5 days, with 19 kilometres covered on day 2, and 14 kilometres covered on both day 3 and day 4. This guided walk stretches from Cape Saint Blaize in Mossel Bay to the Gourits River Mouth.
